Thinking Character in 《Philadelphia》

《Philadelphia》 is one of my favorite movies.
“Philadelphia is a 1993 American drama film and one of the first mainstream Hollywood films to acknowledge HIV/AIDS,homosexuality, and homophobia. 

Hanks won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as Andrew Beckett in the film, 

Andrew Beckett is a senior associate at the largest corporate law firm in Philadelphia. Although he lives with his partner Miguel Álvarez, Beckett is not open about his homosexuality at the law firm, nor the fact that he has AIDS. “
When his bosses knows about that, they make a plot and fired Andrew. The story is about how Miller helps Andrew with this case.

I'm going to select one partsof the movie to show how great the acting is.

Thinking Character

This is the part I like the most in the movie.
They were going to talk about several questions after a personal party for the next day's court.
While Andrew does not answer the questions but  begin to play a piece of opera . He explains the story of the music with great passion that he lost himself in it.
He was weak and thin, moving around in the room with infusion bag.
The camera angle is above his head, and it is a close-up shot.
I think it emphasis his brain and strengthen the feeling that he is listening to the music intently.
The tight frown and closed eyes also shows his attentiveness.

In this progress, he does not stand still but walks several steps as well as turned around.

He is feeling the music with his whole body.

At first Miller is not so interest in the music and feels a little awkward.

Andrew keeps telling about the music.

When the music first changed, his face changed too. The music is full of  hope, so he looks happy.

Here is the second change of the emotion in the music., it turns to sorrow.

Miller begin to focus in the story.
Then the light changed. It become dark.
Characters' faces hide in shadow that we could not see the facial expression clearly.It was a moment the music turns desperate to the joy of life.
at first we can only see his ears clearly, which tells that he is carefully litsening and feeling the voice.

Then the light become stronger and the color turns red, makes his pale face looks lively.
He says"It says, live still,I am life. Heaven is in youe eyes"

Then there is no words, Just the acting shows how Andrew deeply moved by the song.

The light getting dark and bright, Miller is totally focus now.

Andrew talks about the feeling in the music. He is so moved that his tears burst out.

He feels the love and life in the song.

Camera become closer to Miller, we can see some tears in his eyes too.

He is absorbed by the vibrant scene.

Here comes the last highest tone, the crying out of life.

The facial expression and tightly fist strengthen the power.

The music end and Andrew back to reality.

The camera moved back fast, lights become normal.

He put his hand on his chest shows his heart is still bumping fast and he is comforting  himself.

Miller quickly moves his eyes away to hide he is so absorbed and excited.
